1. BIOS Limitations

An important issue when upgrading your hard drive is to know whether or not you’re computers BIOS will support the larger hard drive. All computers have a programmed BIOS limitation. If you purchase a 500gb hard drive and your computers BIOS limitations are set at 136gb, the computer will only recognize the hard drive as 136gb.

There are 2 solutions to this problem. You can obtain a BIOS upgrade & "flash" your BIOS. You can also try visiting the manufacturer's website and downloading the latest BIOS upgrade if available.

2. Interface

Not all notebook hard drives have the same dimensions or interface. There are currently three interfaces available, PATA (Parallel ATA (formerly know as IDE or EIDE)), SATA (Serial ATA), and ZIF (Zero Insertion Force).
